The River Tyne and the Dogger Bank is a hub for the wind farm energy sector with increased traffic over the past few years seeing an expansion of vessels coming in and out of the River Tyne. Ships are getting larger in general and this can place a load burden on bollards and old quays and jetties which may be vulnerable to failure with the increased size of vessel.
Reports of bollard failures are increasing worldwide and with this in mind the issue of health and safety and risk assessment in the Port of Tyne area was considered in relation to the load bearing of bollards and potential consequences of failure. This led to the seeking of a solution to check the integrity of the bollards on the North and South sides of the River.
